Tenure-track asst. professor position in data-driven modelling for ecology and water conservation, University of Calgary

The Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary is hiring an Assistant Professor in data-driven modelling for ecology and water conservation. Ad here. Application deadline is Dec. 31, 2024.

Preference will be given to candidates with a primary focus and interest centered around the modelling of aquatic ecosystems and/or water usage, with an eye to sustainable management of water resources — ensuring water quality and promoting conservation efforts.

This position has both research and teaching expectations. The position is associated with the cross-departmental undergraduate Data Science program, and so the successful applicant’s teaching duties will be primarily or exclusively in the Data Science program. The successful applicant’s home department will depend on the applicant’s expertise and preferences. Selfishly, I’m hoping that we end up hiring a candidate who will want to choose my department (Biological Sciences), but of course I would say that. 🙂

I’m not on the search committee. My Head of Department David Hansen is chairing the search. Questions about the search are best directed to him (dhansen@ucalgary.ca). But if you have broader questions about the university, the city, Canada, etc., I’d be happy to answer them (jefox@ucalgary.ca).

I can tell you that the Data Science program has been growing rapidly, and the Faculty of Science wants to support and fuel that growth. I can also tell you that this position is a regular ol’ open search. So if you think you could do the job and might accept it if offered, please do apply! Finally, I can tell you that, while we’re legally obliged to give preference to qualified Canadian citizens and permanent residents, non-Canadians should definitely apply. I was hired at Calgary as a non-Canadian. During my 20 years at Calgary, our department also has hired several other non-Canadians, including pretty recently. Same goes for other departments in the Faculty of Science–they’ve all hired non-Canadians as well as Canadians in the recent or recent-ish past.

The ad’s been posted to ecoevojobs.net. Please do whatever you can to bring it to the attention of potential applicants.
