How to know what to do — Dylan Dodson

💡 1 IDEA FROM ME

We all know what it’s like to face a decision and not know what to do.

You’ve got a decision that needs to be made, and you genuinely aren’t sure which route to go. But you have to make a decision. What do you do?

Let me offer a helpful thought exercise that will likely bring some clarity: a question to guide you toward a path forward.

When you’re stuck on a decision that needs to be made, ask yourself this question: “What would I tell a friend to do if they were facing this same situation?”

As we all know, it’s pretty easy to give advice to others. You don’t have to be the one who then has to go and do the potentially hard thing, and you don’t have to deal with the relational fallout that it may create if the decision affects others.

Asking yourself what you would tell a friend to do in the exact same situation allows you to lessen the emotional sway in your thought process and focus on the most rational option (even if it is the more difficult one).

So, if you’re facing a tough decision right now, what would you tell your friend to do?

And then go and do that very thing.

💬 1 HELPFUL QUOTE

I. Leo Tolstoy on the importance of how we communicate:

“You should know that when a message you convey to another person is not understood by him, at least one of the following things is true: what you have said is not true, or you have conveyed it without kindness.”

📖 1 BRIEF BOOK REVIEW

Drive by Daniel Pink

An insightful book about what motivates people, and how what we think motivates people is not only often wrong but makes things worse.

However, its rating takes a hit because the last third of the book had a lot of resources and an overview of the concepts in the book. Those things aren’t bad, but reduce the amount of helpful content in the book itself.

It was a good read in some ways (and confirmed my suspicion that giving kids an allowance is better than paying them to do their chores, for example), but at times I had to make myself keep reading it. Good insights, certainly not a bad read, but was not as enjoyable for me as I think it could have been.
